New York City: A Tale of Two Modular Construction Projects

All eyes are on New York City’s Modular Construction and Prefabrication projects. It’s the tale of two cities: With more than 15 active modular construction projects, the city is battling extreme challenges in regards to logistics, timetables, regulations and unprecedented negotiations with union workers.

In a way, the city so far has had a love-hate relationship with ModCon. It loves The Stack, a 22-unit apartment building that was completed within 10 months. On the other hand, there’s no love lost for Atlantic Yards’ B2, which is stuck on the 10th floor of its proposed 32 stories amidst infighting between the developers and the construction company.

While one project was successful and the other was not, there is a lot to learn from both.

Q&A: Cost Cutting with Sarah Tamilarasan

Sarah Tamilarasan, VP of Oilfield Services at Petro Lucrum Inc, and speaker at the upcoming summit, talks cost-cutting, liaising with 3rd parties, and prefabrication in advance of her session.

The Boardroom: 4 Out Of Every 5 Oil & Gas Megaprojects Fail. But why?

In this edition of The Boardroom, we speak to Edward W. Merrow, Founder and CEO of Independent Project Analysis, Inc about the startling number of megaprojects that do not hit the mark in the oil and gas industry. Ed is a recognized expert on the development and execution of large and complex megaprojects and is sought out by Fortune 500 company executives and professionals worldwide. His expertise in megaprojects is built on decades of research on the unique challenges of these complex investments. Download to read the full interview ...

3 Biggest Challenges in Modular Construction (and how to overcome them)

Modular construction is a strategy that was originally conceptualized for the offshore oil industry to allow large amounts of fabrication work to be done onshore. Since that time, a lot of things have changed and modular strategies for onshore projects have evolved. At present, what would be considered the 3 biggest challenges in modularisation? How can you overcome them? This information might just save you millions.

Making a Commitment to Modularization: Understanding its Long-Term Benefits

Modularization reduces project time and waste. It also increases efficiencies and sustainability. But, risks such as available onsite labor, and extreme weather and environmental risks need to be considered. Thomas Barter, Director Construction, Sealifts, Modularization, Worley Parsons discusses these issues and more in this exclusive interview.

Modular Construction from A to Z

Ross Harper, Module Consultant at Spectra Energy, walks us through the modular construction and prefabrication process, including the challenges that each phase and how they are addressed.

Problems include poorly done FEED, unnecessary changes in the process design and P&IDs and an overabundance of scaffolding at up to 30% of the capital cost. Ross Harper outlines how to ensure that your projects stay on-time and on-budget in this interview.
